Subject: Congratulations to Prof. Huadong Guo on His Selection for the 2026 IAF Hall of Fame Award
"I am pleased to inform you that Prof. Huadong Guo, Honorary President of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 IAF Hall of Fame Award by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). This award recognizes his lifelong contributions to space-borne Earth observation, Digital Earth science and technology, and the use of space technology to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Prof. Guo is known globally as the Chief Scientist of SDGSAT-1, the world’s first science satellite dedicated to monitoring the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He pioneered the concept of “fine characterization of human activity traces” from space. By integrating daytime and nighttime sensing of light, thermal infrared, and hyperspectral signatures - key parameters closely linked to human activities - the satellite provides systematic, objective data for tracking progress on multiple SDGs.
Over 40 years, Prof. Guo advanced China’s radar and Earth observation: as 863 expert group head, he enabled key space/airborne systems, contributed to China’s first radar satellite, proposed a Moon-based platform, led major ground and airborne facilities, built the first Digital Earth prototype, and created disaster/mineral exploration systems. Beyond science and engineering, Prof. Guo also played a pivotal role in establishing several major international organizations and programmes, including the ISDE, the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the auspices of UNESCO(HIST), the Digital Sustainable Development Goals Programme(DSP), the Digital Belt and Road Programme, and the ABCC initiative for comparative studies of global change remote sensing.
Prof. Guo's selection for the IAF Hall of Fame is a significant and well-deserved honor. ISDE supported his nomination for this award. On behalf of the ISDE, Richard extends congratulations to Prof. Guo and acknowledges his long-standing leadership in Digital Earth, Earth observation, Big Earth Data, SDG-oriented science, and international scientific cooperation through a formal letter of congratulations.
